I am interested in the Catholic Church and would like to know more about becoming Catholic. Where do I start?
We welcome, journey with and teach all those who seek to follow Jesus Christ through the Catholic Church with a process known as the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA).
-
I have not been baptized. Is the OCIA for me?
Yes. The OCIA is for adults of at least eighteen years of age and leads you to Baptism.
-
I was baptized but never received my First Holy Communion or Confirmation. Is the OCIA for me?
Yes. Baptism with water and in the name of the Trinity—The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit—is considered a valid baptism and is not repeated. You are already Christian and should look forward to completing the sacraments of initiation which are Confirmation and Holy Communion.

What happens after I am initiated into the Catholic Church?
We will continue to walk with you to unfold the meaning of the Sacraments and give you support and guidance though formal and informal meetings.
-
What else is involved?
Along with worshiping with the parish community at Mass on Sundays or Saturday evenings and being immersed in parish social and service activities, there are Rites to celebrate along the way where you will receive graces and blessings from God, affirm your intention to continue toward full initiation in the Church and receive the promise of your sponsor and the entire parish community’s support.
-
I am already baptized. When can I become Catholic?
Based on the faith formation plan we develop with you, you will be initiated at a Sunday Mass when you, your sponsor and the OCIA team agree you are ready. It does not take any pre-set amount of time.
-
How long does OCIA take?
A person is fully initiated in the Catholic Church when they are Baptized, Confirmed and receive Holy Communion. The ideal time for the reception of these three Sacraments is the Easter Vigil in the spring of each year. The entire journey takes about a year, give or take a few months. Everyone is on a personal journey of conversion. We will walk with you on yours.
-
What do you do in the OCIA?
You would be paired with a parish sponsor, or mentor, who will walk with you. You will learn to be Catholic by being immersed in the parish itself. First and foremost is the celebration of the Mass. You are also invited to experience the variety of social, service and faith-sharing activities in our welcoming parish. Each experience lends itself to learning about Catholic doctrine and practices, all the while developing a closer relationship with our Savior, Jesus Christ. You and your sponsor will work together and keep in touch by meeting in person, by email or telephone.
-

Various Volunteer Opportunities Available:
Parishioners can participate in this ministry in various ways. Newcomers to our community are welcomed at Mass and at social and service activities, by OCIA volunteers who are willing to share their personal faith stories, explore the meaning of the Gospel in daily life, and teach the doctrines and lessons of the Catholic faith. They have the attributes of being good listeners and can keep confidences.
